Course description:
The Online Master of Public Administration and Policy (MPAP) at American University is a 2-year distance learning program that arms you with critical analytical skills for careers across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors and at all levels of government. The online MPAP enables you to earn a graduate degree on your schedule. Required core courses comprise 33 credit hours, including classes in the foundations of public administration and policy analysis, project management, economics, legal, budgeting and financial management, leadership and managing human capital, quantitative methods, and organizational analysis.
Upon completion, you will possess the knowledge and skills to:
• Analyze administrative problems and craft solutions by applying knowledge of organizational management and leadership, organizational structure and culture, human resource systems, as well as the political and legal context of contemporary public service organizations.
• Formulate, evaluate, and communicate public policies and programs using acquired analytic frameworks and methodological skills, including statistics, economics, and politics while considering their responsiveness, accountability, effectiveness and equity.
• Incorporate a range of constitutional and ethical values into policy and administrative analysis and actions.
• Apply acquired skill sets, expertise, and values to real-world policy and organizational problems in a collaborative manner.

Entry Requirements:
While previous academic or professional work in public administration or policy is not required, applicants who have acquired practical experience before beginning their degree program are preferred. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. They need to submit a statement about their background, career interests, and reasons for pursuing graduate study. They may substitute test scores from the GMAT or LSAT, for the GRE.
Students who completed degrees at institutions outside the United States are required to submit:
• A transcript evaluation (and a translation, if applicable) in addition to original transcripts;
• Official and current GRE test scores (may be waived for applicants with a master’s degree or higher);
• TOEFL or IELTS score, if applicable; and
• Letters of recommendation.
