Brief description:

DAAD is offering scholarships to graduates around the world who wish to continue their education in Germany with a Masters degree programme in Architecture or continuing course of study in the field of Architecture not leading to a final qualification. Studies will have to be undertaken at a state or state-recognised German university of the student’s choice.

Host Institution(s):

German universities

Level/Field(s) of study:

• Masters degree in Architecture (Design/Planning only)
• Complementary course in Architecture (Design/Planning only) that does not lead to a final qualification (not an undergraduate course)

Number of Scholarships:

Not specified

Target group:

International students from around the world

Scholarship value/inclusions:

Master’s degree programme: Scholarships will be awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen study programme (up to a maximum of 24 months). Applicants who are already in Germany in the first year of a Masters degree course at the time of application may apply for funding for their second year of study. In this case, it is not possible to extend the scholarship.

Complementary studies not leading to a final qualification: Scholarships will be awarded for 1 academic year.

All scholars will be paid a monthly stipend of € 850 and given a travel allowance, one-off study allowance and payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover. Under certain circumstances, scholars may be given a monthly rent subsidy and a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.

To enable scholars to learn German in preparation for their stay in Germany, DAAD will also pay for the course fees for the online language course “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” for 6 months after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter, and if necessary, for German language courses of 2, 4 or 6 months’ duration before the start of the study visit. Participation in a language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language is German at the German host institution.

If the scholar holder is enrolled in a Master or postgraduate degree programme which includes a study period abroad, funding for this period abroad is usually only possible under the following conditions:

• The study visit is essential for achievement of the scholarship objective.
• The study period is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer
periods cannot be funded, even partially.
• The study period does not take place in the home country.

Eligibility:

Applicants must possess a Bachelors degree in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or Landscape Planning. They should have taken their final examinations no longer than 6 years before the application deadline. Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months are ineligible.

Language skills: Applicants in the field of architecture should have a knowledge of the language of instruction that corresponds to the requirements of the chosen university. If you do not yet have the language skills required by the university at the time of your scholarship application, your application should indicate the extent to which you are in a position to reach the required level.

Application instructions:

Applications are currently closed.

Applicants will have to submit work samples in addition to their application form, which will be used to determine acceptance. As confirmation of a scholarship does not automatically guarantee admission to the host university, applicants will have to apply directly to the university themselves and will have to check with the university the application deadline for the course they are attending. The application deadline is 30 September 2020.
